VQHA Open Show Program

The purpose of the Open Show Awards Program is to recognize VQHA Members and Open Show Members who compete in Virginia and Regional Open and 4-H Horse Shows. The program includes both a registered American Quarter Horse and All-Breed divisions.

In order to collect points in the VQHA Open Show Program:

  1. Participant must be a member in good standing with VQHA
    a) Quarter Horse Division participants must be a full member of VQHA
    b) All-Breed participants do not have to be a VQHA Member however, they must pay an administrative fee of $5 per Youth and $10 per Adult

Open Show Forms:

VQHA is encouraging Show Managers to hold Clinics in conjunction with their Open Shows, All-Novice AQHA Shows and Trail Rides and may provide up to $200* to cover the cost of Clinicians. This program will provide a continuing education to exhibitors, stimulate business for local trainers and shows, promote use of idle animals and increase revenue of secondary equine businesses.

VQHA Open Show Requirements:

  1. Participant must be a member in good standing with VQHA:
    a) Quarter Horse Division participants must be a full member of VQHAb) All-Breed participants do not have to be a VQHA Member however, they must pay an administrative fee of $5 per Youth and $10 per Adult
  1. If an individual is not a current member of VQHA and would like for his/her points to count towards year- end awards, membership to VQHA must be postmarked and submitted within five business days after the date of the open show.
  1. Points/placing are per horse/rider team.
  2. Must compete in a minimum of five (5) open shows between January 1 and November 30 (Bonus Points will not count unless 5 open shows have been done must compete at the open show in the division which bonus points are assigned to. )
  3. Must accumulate a minimum of 15 points to be counted towards any division award.
  4. Any show open to horses of all breeds and all colors can be used for this program.  Rodeos will count as open shows for those participants in the Timed Event Divisions.
  5. Youth participants must be 18 years of age or under as of January 1st of the current year, as specified in Rule 102 (g)(3) of the AQHA Official Handbook of Rules & Regulations.  Those who qualify for adult awards are those 19 years of age and older as of January 1st.  Small Fry participants must be 11 years of age and under as of January 1st.
  6. Six places will count for points:

  7. Dressage points are as follows:• 70 plus test score = 6 points• 65-69 test score = 5 points• 60-64 test score = 4 points• 55-59 test score = 3 points• 50-54 test score = 2 points• 45-49 test score = 1 points
  8. Participants who enter classes offered at AQHA/VQHA approved show circuits (single or multiple day events) will receive 10 bonus points to their selected division per circuit they attend (not per show).  For example – If you compete in classes on one, two, or three days at a circuit show consisting of three (3) days of showing, you will be awarded a maximum of 10 points in your selected division (not 30).
  9. Participants who attend a VQHA District Meeting will receive 15 bonus points to their division of choice – maximum of 60 bonus points for the year.  Attendance must be indicated on Point Reporting Forms and confirmed by the Regional Director. Youth who attend VQHYA Meetings will receive 10 bonus points to their division of choice – maximum of 50 bonus points for the year.
  10. Participants must complete an official VQHA Open Show Awards Program point reporting form. This form must contain the signature of the exhibitor and the authorized signature of the open show secretary (exhibitor and show secretary cannot be the same).
  11. Any discrepancies between the information submitted and that of the respective organizations will be resolved in favor of the organization’s authority.
  12. Point Reporting Forms must be received within 30 days of the Open Show date.
  13. The final Point Reporting Form for the year must be received (in hand, not postmarked by) no later than November 30th.

Quarter Horse and Open Divisions

  1. Youth Halter/Showmanship – Eligible classes: Halter, Showmanship at Halter
  2. Adult Halter/Showmanship – Eligible classes: Halter, Showmanship at Halter
  3. Youth Western Performance – Eligible classes: Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, , Western Riding
  4. Adult Western Performance – Eligible classes: Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, , Western Riding
  5. Youth Hunt Seat Performance – Eligible classes: Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation
  6. Adult Hunt Seat Performance – Eligible classes: Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation
  7. Youth Dressage – Eligible classes: Flat Tests, Freestyle and Equitation
  8. Adult Dressage – Eligible classes: Flat Tests, Freestyle and Equitation
  9. Youth Speed Performance – Eligible classes: Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Stake Race
  10. Adult Speed Performance – Eligible classes: Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Stake Race
  11. Small Fry Western Performance – Eligible classes:  Walk/Jog, Go-As-You-Please, Western Horsemanship ,Trail, reining
  12. Small Fry Hunt Seat Performance – Eligible classes:  Walk/Trot, Go-As-You-Please, Hunt Seat Equitation, Hunter Hack, any non-cantering Over Fences class
  13. Small Fry Halter/Showmanship – Eligible classes: Halter, Showmanship at Halter
  14. Youth Reining- Any open shows or or any reining show open to all breeds count(example: NRHA shows will count for points)
  15. Adult Reining- Any open shows or any reining show open to all breeds count(example: NRHA shows will count for points)
  16. Youth Trail (small fry trail will be included in western performance points)
  17. Adult Trail
  18. 18 Youth Over Fences – any over fence or hunter hack class (small fry over fences will be included in small fry hunt seat performance)
  19. Adult Over Fences – any over fence or hunter hack class

Exhibitors must comply with all rules and requirements for participation in both the VQHA and respective Open Show Associations. VQHA will present awards for Champion and Reserve in each division at the annual Year-End Banquet.

PLEASE NOTE: Fun classes such as egg-n-spoon, command break-n-out, and lead-line DO NOT qualify for points
