Virginia Quarter Horse Association Queen
Hello Everyone and please welcome our 2008 VQHA Queen, Samantha Dawn Formeck!
Samantha (Sam) is the daughter of Chuck and Martha Formeck from Fairfax, Virginia. She is 20 years old and a sophomore at Northern Virginia Community College; and plans to transfer to Mason for a Criminal Justice Degree.
She tells me she has been in love with horses all of her 20 years. She got her first horse when she was seven years old. She had a horse named Tanner that she shared with her sister, Megan, which introduced them to the quarter horse competitions. Sam, has been showing VQHA shows for only approximately three years. I remember her dad saying to me when I met the family at the first Firework's Spectacular Show at Rosemont that the walk/jog class would be all that Sam would probably ever show in with her cute walk/job horse, Zippos Two Eyed Beb that we all know as Lexy. Sam won that walk/jog championship at that show.
Well, check this out, in 2006, Sam and Lexy were the VQHA All Around Champions. And, guess what? Sam and Lexy will be our 2007 VQHA All Around Champions. And, additionally, they placed Top 10 in two events. I believe we have a competitive VQHA Queen on our hands!
East Coast Championship Show
The VQHA Queen stayed quite busy at the ECCS. The first part of the week she was very busy showing and placing in her classes. The second half she worked the show and assisted with award presentations and other errands the office staff requested of her. She was also busy with her personal introduction to the vendors and delivering lunches
to those that could not take time for a lunch break.
We had our second annual cake walk on Thursday evening which was a success. We sold six (6) delicious cakes for $840.00. The cakes were delivered in great duffles displaying the VQHA logo and Queen Sponsor with all accessories included for a "sweet picnic".
On Friday, we had our first "goodie auction" at the Fashion Show. This was so much fun and the participation was quite exciting. Sam's, dad actually held the auction at the fashion show and was very good on energizing the crowd. The fashionable green totes displayed the VQHA logo and Queen Sponsor. Each had cupcakes, cookies, and brownies; and a "going green" t-shirt. Each had a surprise bag of hair combs, hair bands, & body glitter adorned with a queen's crown. This fun activity made $660.00.
The drawing for the Queen's 50/50 raffle was held on Saturday. We sold 200 tickets at $10 each. The Queen drew two (2) $500 winners. There winners were Harry Maizhn from Centreville, Va.; and Darlene Grimm from Thornsburg, Va. Congratulations to the winners.
Also, we sold a few t-shirts, cap, and pooch bandannas and made $46.00.
The Queen had a tremendous week and we are so thankful for all of your help and support. Thank you for all of your wonderful comments on our Queen's Program and your continued support!

Our VQHA Queen, Samantha Formeck, was very busy at the Annual Awards Banquet. On Friday evening, she was presented with the VQHA Queen’s crown and sash which perfectly complimented her fashionable attire as she addressed the Board of Directors with her speech of introduction. A copy of this speech is below. Saturday morning she helped arrange the Queen’s booth. At our booth we had information available on the National Wildlife Federation which supports our “Going Green Campaign”. Information was available on the Queen’s Program for any girls expressing an interest in becoming Queen.
- As funds raisers we had our green T-shirts for $6.00, sporting our logo, “Going Green with the VQHA Queen”. Caps in yellow, pink, or khaki which compliment the T’s were also on sale for $10.
- And a very easy sale was the homemade fudge and chocolate chip cookies made by Sam’s grandmother to help support her reign as Queen.
- We have custom made bling-bling doggy bandannas. They are the cheapest “show fashions” you will ever purchase. (Sizes S-M for $3.00, and M-L for $5.00)
- Coloring sheets were given out to all that would participate in the Queen’s Coloring Contest.
- We started selling the Queen’s Raffle tickets. They are $10 each and we will sell 200 with two, $500 winners being drawn at the East Coast Championship Show. Look for us with tickets for sale at the Spring Breakout and the East Coast Championship Show.
Of course, her beautiful new show saddle was on display with many thanks to our Sponsors that made this saddle a reality. With your continued support we will continue these wonderful gifts in the Queen’s Annual Showcase each year.
Saturday afternoon, Sam gave an additional speech at the General Membership Meeting. After the meeting, she organized the fittings for all the participants in the Queen’s 1st Annual Fashion Show held after the banquet dinner. The fashion show had lots of bling and color and was fun for all. Many favorable comments were received from the banquet crowd.
The coloring contest winners, Morgan Rogers and Alyssa Story, were announced during the awards presentation portion of the banquet. Each received a prize from the Queen. Sam assisted with the Award presentations during the evening and recognized the Queen’s Sponsors. The Annual VQHA Auction held prior to the dinner was quite successful for our Queen this year.
- With Easter approaching, we thought an Easter basket Page would be nice. Our Easter basket was full of gourmet candy goodies, a decorative bunny, a music box, purse, and horse supplies, with a total value of $250. The basket was purchased by Ceclia Hylton for $500.
- We had a beautiful extra large Easter Duck. The duck was adorned with a Queen’s sash and crown. The Duck was purchased by Cecilia Hylton for $250.
- And, thanks to Cecilia’s fun gesture of an auctioned date with EDDIE, the Queen received an additional $150 as this was purchased by Vickie Condon.
Thank you so much Cecilia for all of your continued support.
- The National Wildlife Federation contributed ten, Pewter Running Horse ornaments. For each ornament purchased, a tree would be planted in VQHA’s name to support our Going Green Campaign. The 10 ornaments sold for $800.
- Two saddle covers were purchased for $115. During the weekend, we had sales of shirts, caps, bandannas, and fudge & cookies totaling $371.00.
This was a great way for us to start our new Queen’s reign. After the awards, Sam could be seen boogying on the dance floor; and making fun memories to be shared for years to come as the 2008 VQHA Queen. Thank you so much everyone for all of your support. We are truly grateful!

Well, I thought I should make all of our members aware that our new Queen, Samantha Formeck, and her family have tendencies to be just a "little fudgey"! And, that is a great thing for us. At the mid-winter sale, the entire Formeck family came in with fudge, homemade by Sam's Grandmother, and made sales throughout the day to collect $125.00 for the Queen's Fund. And, I am told that we may have some more of that decadent candy available at the banquet. It is the rich old-fashion kind that is simply delicious!
And, as all of you know we have been trying to sell enough raffle tickets to pay for a very nice three-wheeled scooter acquired from Randy's. We finally sold the remaining tickets at the mid-winter sale to pay for the scooter and we made $200.00 for the Queen's fund. Mike Jennings sale group advertised the tickets for sale throughout the day and Kendal Jennings drew the winning ticket in the afternoon. The scooter finally found a home with VQHA members, Jerry and Julie Slemp of Louisa, Virginia. Congratulations Jerry and Julie!
A very BIG, BIG THANK YOU to everyone that supported the scooter raffle!

Auction Items and Fund Raisers
Please stop by the Queen's display at the banquet and visit. We will be sponsoring the Queen's Coloring Contest with a prize for both a boy and a girl. We will be selling chances on a very unique Easter basket that will include items that will be delightful for all.
There will be two western saddle covers donated by the queen in the Auction. These sales will benefit the Queen's fund so please bid and help us out. As you recall, last year we auctioned "kisses from the queen". This year, we were fortunate to receive from the National Wildlife Federation, pewter, running horse ornaments, There are only ten (10) of these available. For each ornament sold, a tree will be planted in VQHA's name to support our continuing "Going Green Campaign". For your entertainment during dinner, there will be a Queen's Fashion Show with special pricing on any purchases made.
Please remember the Feed Truckload sales sponsored by Southern States and Nutrena with Snow Hill Farm, Vince and Sheila Melton. For each bag sold, $1.00 will be donated to the Queen's Fund, There will be flyers available with feed description and pricing. Please choose your feed type, how much, and when you want it delivered. Good Evening to the Virginia Quarter Horse Association Board of Directors, fellow members, and guests:
I am Samantha Formeck and I will be VQHA’s Queen for 2008. I feel truly blessed to be able to represent this organization during my reign as Queen.
Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am 20 years old and I am attending Northern Virginia Community College. I will be transferring to George Mason University to earn a Criminal Justice degree.
I have been a member of VQHA for five years and have steadily become more active with the Association each year. I started out as a youth member and have made many friends and had a ton of fun. When I moved up to amateur, I became the Assistant Youth Director and strived to be a role model. I hope to make more friends in the Amateur Division as well and be just as active as I was when I was a Youth. And, with this year’s reign as Queen, I am certain that those activities will be exceeded. The memories I take with me the most from being a youth member are the fun times I had at the shows and the friendships I have made with both youths and adults. And, to give back and to share those valued memories, I volunteered in helping a therapeutic riding center which helped those less fortunate than myself.
I am taking my role as VQHA Queen very seriously. I will make myself available to all who may request my presence. I will be available at all VQHA sponsored events, 4-H Clubs activities as requested, and any other functions that will promote VQHA and the American Quarter Horse. I will educate everyone I meet to the benefits of becoming a VQHA member.
As for the competition at the Congress, I have already started to study the rulebook for the test portion of the contest. I have plans on speaking to many of last year’s Queen Contestants about how they prepared for the competition. And I am working with Connie Christopher on the horsemanship part of the contest.
I have set personal goals for myself for the Congress Queen competition. I hope to place in all three events which will give me a good chance of bringing the crown home to Virginia. No matter how I do, I will pass everything I have learned during this contest on to the VQHA Queens that follow me. You can be assured I will be giving 110 percent to this year’s All American Quarter Horse Congress Queens’ Contest and to the VQHA.
Once again thank you for this opportunity to represent VQHA as it’s 2008 Queen. I am proud to be the VQHA Queen; and by the end of the year, I hope you are as proud of me!
I remain respectfully your 2008 VQHA Queen, Samantha Formeck.
