The VQHA Virginia-Bred Program: Serving the Virginia Horse Industry

The Virginia-Bred Program of the Virginia Quarter Horse Association is a growing and
dynamic initiative designed to bolster the Virginia horse breeding industry. The overall
goal of the program is to demonstrate that Virginia represents a strong source of quality-
bred horses.

Showcasing the talents and accomplishments of horses born in the state, the program
provides prize money and promotion to exhibitors, breeders, and owners. In 2024, as in
past years, one set of classes was offered at a single show, although–for the first
time–the classes were open to any stock-horse type born in Virginia, not just to AQHA-
registered stock. Entries grew by more than 30%. The 2025 fall Jac O’Lantern Classic
will again be open to all breeds.

This year, the program will offer classes the following shows:
● Spring Breakout at the Virginia Horse Center, Lexington, VA, April 17-20*
● Jac O’Lantern Classic at the Meadow Event Park, Doswell, VA, October 31-
November 2
● Virginia Harvest at the Virginia Horse Center, Lexington, VA, November 21-23*

*Classes at these shows will be AQHA-only.
